Troy Tulowitzki’s chance of becoming National League rookie of the year got a late-season boost Tuesday afternoon when he was named the National League rookie of the month for August.
Tulowitzki hit .333 (4-for-20) with six homers, eight doubles and one triple in 29 games in August. His 15 extra-base hits and 25 RBIs led all major league rookies.
Tulowitzki’s 18 total home runs ranks sixth by a rookie shortstop in major-league history. He leads all NL rookies in hits (145), RBIs (75), total bases (230), runs (78), walks (46) and multi-hit games (tied-38).
His .985 fielding percentage ranks fourth among all major league shortstops. He leads all shortstops in total chances (714), assists (482), double plays (104) and putouts (tied-221).
Tulowitzki is the fourth Rockies player to win a player of the month award. Pitcher Jason Jennings won it in August 2002 on his way to winning rookie of the year; shortstop Clint Barmes was player of the month for April 2005; and third baseman Garrett Atkins won the award in June 2005.
