NEW YORK—Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was suspended for one game by the commissioner’s office Wednesday after he was ejected last week.
Bob Watson, baseball’s chief disciplinarian, also fined Hurdle an undisclosed amount for his “inappropriate actions” last Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hurdle was set to serve his suspension Wednesday night when the Rockies hosted San Francisco. Bench coach Jamie Quirk filled in as manager.
“I was disciplined for making contact with an umpire and spraying him,” Hurdle said in Denver. “I guess I used too many words with Ps and Ss.”
Hurdle was ejected Friday by first-base umpire Jerry Layne in the ninth inning for arguing a close call. The manager contended that shortstop Stephen Drew’s throw pulled first baseman Tony Clark off the bag on a leadoff grounder by Troy Tulowitzki. Replays were inconclusive.
The Rockies won 7-3 in 10 innings.
