A Steamboat Springs mother is under arrest on suspicion of killing her 1-year-old daughter.

The homicide is Steamboat’s first since the spring of 2000, said the city’s public safety director, J.D. Hays.

Hays said officers went to 33-year-old Luz Devina Cisneros’ apartment Thursday morning. Inside, Hays said, they found Cisneros injured and her daughter, Briana Simon, unconscious. Both were taken to the hospital, where Briana, whose first birthday was about two weeks ago, died.

Cisneros was treated at the hospital and then taken to the Routt County Jail.

Hays refused to provide additional details on the case, and a judge has sealed public records in the investigation.

The Steamboat Pilot reported on its website today that police believe Cisneros’ injuries were self-inflicted, although authorities haven’t specified what kind of weapon was used.

According to the Pilot, investigators said Cisneros had argued with Briana’s father, 30-year-old Isaias Simon Urrutia, then locked him out of the home and threatened to harm herself and their daughter.
