School colors: green and green

Valor Christian High School opened its doors Tuesday, becoming Colorado’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-registered private high school.

A variety of green building techniques – including low-emitting materials such as adhesives, sealants, paints and carpet – were incorporated throughout the $73 million school in Highlands Ranch. The building will use about half the energy of a standard public school, saving about $65,000 a year.

Seventy-seven percent of construction material was diverted from landfills into recycling programs.

The Valor field house, stadium, football field and track are expected to be completed by May. Plans include a visual- and performing-arts center and an indoor aquatics facility.

Low marks for HOAs

Homeowners associations won’t win any popularity contests, according to a recent survey.

A combined 69 percent of respondents classified HOAs as either a major headache or a minor annoyance, according to a survey of 3,000 homeowners by Golden-based .

Of those who completed the survey, 54 percent said they’d rather live with a sloppy neighbor than an HOA.

Bringing outdoors into garages

In an effort to lure buyers to its latest model homes in Frederick, Feature Homes is hosting a Recreation Vehicle Fair in its Rinn Valley Ranch development.

Feature, a semi-custom homebuilder, has identified the RV and outdoor enthusiast as its market niche. It will build garages to fit RVs, boats and large trucks at Rinn Valley Ranch, on Weld County Road 7 west of Interstate 25.

RV dealers in the area are sending vehicles and camper trailers to the neighborhood for viewing Thursday through Saturday.
