Greeley – Danny Woodhead scored three touchdowns as Division II Chadron (Neb.) State rolled to a 31-0 victory Saturday over host Northern Colorado in front of 6,684 fans at Nottingham Field.
Woodhead, last year’s Harlon Hill Trophy winner as the top player in Division II, finished with 147 yards rushing against UNC (0-2). He also caught five passes for 133 yards.
Woodhead is 448 yards shy of the all-time, all-classification NCAA rushing record. His 6,906 career rushing yards rank fourth after he surpassed South Dakota State’s Josh Ranek (6,794 yards, 1997-2001) on Saturday. Grove City, Pa.’s, R.J. Bowers (1997-2000) holds the rushing record with 7,353 yards.
Woodhead scored twice in the first quarter, on a 2-yard run and a 21-yard pass from Joe McLain. The Eagles led 28-0 by halftime.
McLain was 19-for-28 passing for 265 yards and an interception for Chadron (3-0).
Quarterback Mike Vlahogeorge took most of the snaps Saturday for Northern Colorado, a week after a 63-6 loss to then-No. 23 Hawaii when he was the backup. He finished 10-for-21 passing for 80 yards and an interception Saturday.
Dominic Breazeale, who had 51 yards passing and one interception against Hawaii, was 2-for-4 for 11 yards Saturday.
Of Northern Colorado’s 11 drives, seven ended with punts. The Bears’ closest scoring opportunity was a 21-yard missed field goal by Michael York in the third quarter.
“Right now it’s a hard situation,” UNC coach Scott Downing said. “But you can also see clearly how hard our guys are working in practice and in the games and how much progress is being made.”
