Air Force Academy – Even though Air Force senior linebacker Drew Fowler knows it’s time to move on, he can’t seem to stop talking about his big play Saturday with just over a minute to go in the Falcons’ 20-12 win at Utah.
When a player makes a defensive stop near the goal line that decides a game, it’s something to talk about. After receiving Mountain West Conference defensive player of the week honors Monday, Fowler had to explain again his part in stopping Utah running back Darryl Poston short of the AFA goal line on fourth down.
Fowler led the Falcons in tackles with 14 at Utah. Ten of his tackles came in the second half.
“It was fun while it lasted,” Fowler said. “But we have a big game Thursday. It’s something I can talk about down the road, but we have bigger stuff to worry about. It’s a good honor to get it, but I didn’t get it by myself.”
McCarthy update
Kip McCarthy was back on the practice field Monday, but the senior tailback’s strained right knee was a handicap.
“I tried to play against Utah and that didn’t work out as well as I wanted,” said McCarthy, who had four carries for 11 yards against the Utes. “The goal right now is to get back to where I can play a whole game. I felt fine Sunday, but not good today. I’m not counting myself out for (Thursday’s home game against) TCU.”
Depth chart
Senior Ryan Williams, hampered most of the preseason with a shoulder injury, moved ahead of senior Scott Peeples at fullback. Junior Aaron Kirchoff moved ahead of senior Bobby Giannini at free safety. Senior Chris Monson regained the starting role at right tackle.
