Getting your player ready...

Boulder — Colorado freshman quarterback Cody Hawkins was too young to remember much about Florida State’s first national championship season in 1993 but the Seminoles’ dominance through the decide hooked him.

“I was definitely a huge Florida State fan,” said Hawkins, who is preparing to face the Seminoles (1-1) in Saturday’s 8 p.m. game at Folsom Field.”Peter Warrick was my favorite player for the way he made plays.”

Everybody on the Seminoles made plays in those days, it seemed. From 1987 to 2000, Florida State finished in the top 5 of the national polls each season.

In recent years, Florida State has returned among the mortals. The ‘Noles went 7-6 a season ago.

CU coach Dan Hawkins recalled his son wearing a Florida State cap as a youngster. “He was a big ‘Noles fan. Tey were a good team. And he liked their uniforms.”

Impacting others

Apparently, Dan Hawkins also kept an eye on Bowden’s program. During Monday’s Big 12 teleconference with the media, Hawkins credited Bowden with being an innovator in the college game, including his penchant for trick plays and taking risks, a coaching trait that Hawkins shares.

“(Bowden) was taking a lot of those shots early on,” Hawkins said. “And as he was building that program, he had to take some of those (risks) to get where you want to go.”

Footnotes

CU running backs coach Darian Hagan said there is a possibility that the redshirt might be pulled off true freshman tailback Brian Lockridge if the running game continues to sputter. CU is expected to invite a sizeable group of recruits to Saturday night’s game in Boulder. Other prospects can catch the telecast on ESPN. “It’s a great feature game; there are a lot of positives to it,” Hawkins said of the national visibility. A group of ASU fans waited after the game for Colorado players to come off the field and shouted “60 and 1, 60 and 1” at Cody Hawkins, referring to his previously unbeaten record as a starting quarterback dating to his Pop Warner youth-league days. “I’ve lost before,” Cody told reporters who heard the chants. “Our (high school) basketball team was just OK, our track team was OK. And my brother (Drew, the starting quarterback at Holy Family High School) beats me at pool all the time.”
