In what resembled a blind man’s game of “pin the fly on the carp,” a team of Jeff Bird and guide Clem Rinehart won the inaugural Denver Trout Unlimited Carp Slam Tournament on the South Platte River through Denver.
With more than double the desirable volume of water and poor visibility, 12 teams found sight fishing difficult Saturday; only five carp were caught. A team of Doug Carson and Rob Kolanda also caught two carp, but Bird won by virtue of the largest fish. Dave Zieg and guide Willey Taifel caught the other carp.
Interestingly, the tournament produced a number of other species, including 16 smallmouth bass, eight walleye and a single rainbow trout.
“We’re excited about the way the event turned out and will do it again next year,” said Tim Emery, the event coordinator.
