An unidentified male suspect was in custody Sunday evening in the deaths of two men who were shot early Sunday morning after a group of people was refused entrance to a house party.
Police were called to 1555 S. Yates St.just after midnight and found two men with gunshot wounds, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver police spokesman.
The victims were taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where they died a short time later.
Police did not release the names of the victims or the name of the man arrested later Sunday.
The shootings occurred after a group of people arrived at the home and wanted to join a party there but were refused, police said. One person among the group pulled a gun and shot the victims.
The group then fled, police said.
Neighbors on Sunday said one of the dead men lived at the tidy, single-story home with his wife and two children.
They described him as a construction worker who enjoyed playing with the kids when he got off of work.
“I think it’s scary,” said neighbor Leslie Wynkoop, 43, of the shootings. “It’s contemptible and just wrong, period.”
Wynkoop described the victim who lived in the home as a “good family man.”
Wynkoop said the victims were cousins.
Marco Perez, 29, who also lives on the block, said he was in bed at about midnight when he heard what he thought was “fireworks.”
A short time later, Perez said, police arrived and he went outside to see what was going on.
“Everyone was huddled around this one guy (lying) in the street,” Perez said. “It was pretty crazy.”
A man at the home Sunday morning declined to talk about the incident.
