Woodland Park — A female robbery suspect was shot and killed by police this morning after officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at a pharmacy.
The Woodland Park Police Department said they received a 911 call reporting an armed robbery in progress at Drake’s Pharmacy in the Ben Franklin store about 10:19 a.m., today. Officers arrived on the scene at 10:26 a.m.
The department confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting was uninjured and that the female suspect was dead.
The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation was called in to process the crime scene, police said.
Woodland Park Police Chief Bob Larson told the Gazette that it was the first attempted armed robbery in the town since the mid-1980s.
“It’s always hard for a small town to go through something like this,” Larson told the Colorado Springs television station 11 News.
Larson told the Gazette that he did not know what circumstances led to the shooting, how many shots were fired or what the woman wanted.
The officers involved in the shooting will be put on administrative leave until the investigation is over, Larson said.
The Ben Franklin store is in the Gold Hill Square South shopping center near the intersection of Colorado Highway 67 and U.S. 24.
