It can be an expensive proposition, watching the Broncos.
No, I’m not talking about ticket prices at Invesco Field at Mile High. I’m talking about all those people who e-mail me wondering why the Broncos can’t cover the point spread.
The answer is they can, and have. Once, to be exact, in seven games with Jay Cutler as their starting quarterback.
Somewhere in there, there’s a lesson to be learned, and here it is: Cutler, for all his obvious talents, doesn’t know how to put a team away because he has never done it before.
The Broncos’ one blowout win with him under center came last year at Arizona. Then you had the Broncos’ blowout loss at San Diego. Other than those two games, the Cutler-led Broncos have spent most of their time in harm’s way, with the game hanging in the balance in the closing minutes.
They’ve won twice by one point and another time by three. In between, they lost twice by a field goal. After a while, you look at the results of their games and you get the impression they are what they are. As in, a team good enough to win close games, but not good enough to blow teams out.
Of course, that’s subject to change. As Cutler gains more experience and becomes a player capable of carrying his team on his shoulders, the Broncos figure to put up more one-sided wins.
