Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is among those reading the children’s classic “The Story of Ferdinand” today as part of a national literacy campaign.
Hickenlooper read to first-graders from Dora Moore K-8 public school this morning at the Hyatt Regency Denver at the Colorado Convention Center.
Similar events will take place throughout the country during the “Jumpstart: Read for the Record” campaign, a national effort to create awareness about the education gap that exists between socio-economic levels in the United States while raising money to fund early education for underserved youths.
The shared reading experience is an effort to break the world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day. Last year, the record was 150,000 children.
The book by Wilbur Munro Leaf is the story of a bull who would rather smell flowers than fight in the bull ring.
Every Toys “R” Us in the United States will host the event at 4 p.m. local time.
