The first-degree-murder trial of a Greeley woman accused of killing the wife of a Greeley police officer will be held in Larimer County, a judge ruled today.

Weld County District Judge Roger Klein agreed with lawyers on both sides of the case that Shawna Nelson would probably not get a fair trial in Weld County. Nelson’s trial is scheduled for Nov. 29.

Nelson allegedly shot Heather Garraus, 37, on Jan. 23 in front of Garraus’ office in Greeley. Nelson was allegedly having an affair with Garraus’s husband — Greeley Police Officer Ignacio Garraus — which resulted in a baby boy.

Attorneys said the heavy publicity the case generated would make it impossible to seat an impartial jury. There also is a likelihood that prospective jurors in Weld County would be acquainted with someone involved in the case, Klein said.
