Colorado State safety Klint Kubiak spent a second night in a Houston hospital, continuing a dreadful weekend for his team and his father’s Houston Texans.
The CSU safety, who met his parents for dinner Friday night, took a knee in warm-ups before the Rams’ game against the University of Houston. Preliminary tests showed low blood pressure and a bleeding ulcer.
The younger Kubiak had planned to stay over Saturday night and spend Sunday on the Texans’ sideline. The Texans lost their first game this season and several players to injury.
CSU officials hoped Kubiak could return to Fort Collins today. His football status is uncertain.
After the frustrating 0-3 start in nonleague play, the Rams head into the Mountain West schedule as the only MWC team without a win. Unlike Utah, which upset UCLA one week and then was blanked by UNLV on Saturday, the Rams have consistently played well in the first half, and just as consistently have come apart in the second half.
The Rams will be looking to end two streaks Saturday: an overall 10-game losing streak and seven consecutive losses in the MWC.
“I hope our guys will keep their heads above water,” CSU coach Sonny Lubick said of the return to Texas to play TCU.
The Rams watched a 24-10 lead late in the third quarter turn into a 38-27 loss at Houston, their biggest losing margin this season.
“It’s disheartening for the players,” Lubick said. “We’ll see who the real guys are as time goes on plugging away. That will be the challenge as a coaching staff and for me to see what we’re made of. You can only talk so long. I’m sure with each loss you start dropping your head a little bit.”
Much as last season’s 4-1 start was erased by a seven- game slide, the players know the first three weeks won’t be remembered much if the Rams turn it around.
“It’s a new beginning,” defensive end Jesse Nading said. “All our goals are still intact.”
