The National Weather Service calls today “a busy weather day” as hazardous weather threatens the northeast portion of the state while wet, chilly weather has covered the metro area.
A powerful storm west of Colorado is threatening to move east during the day, bringing with it the threat of thunderstorms and showers, as well as snow down to the 8,500-foot level.
Some of the state’s highways are wet, but none has iced up yet. The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed temporarily around 9 a.m. a mile east of the Eisenhower Tunnel due to multiple accidents caused by snow and slush on the roads.
I-70 was also briefly closed eastbound near Idaho Springs.
The metro area is blanketed by clouds that are drizzling rain and creating fog in some areas. Boulder reports pea-sized hail and rain.
Monument Hill and Interstate 25 north of Colorado Springs is foggy and wet, but traffic is moving fine. Colorado Springs and south is mostly sunny.
The metro-area forecast calls for scattered rain throughout the day and evening, with temperatures reaching into the mid-60s.
The rest of the week will see high temperatures in the 70s.
