So often geology books are dry, stuffy tomes that spend too much time on elaborate, technical explanations that the lay person gets lost in and not enough pages displaying the rocks and formations that the average reader finds most interesting.
But “Landforms of Southern Utah” ($15, Mountain Press Publishing Co.) is the right combination of narrative and visual information for hikers and geology geeks who want to know more about what they are seeing and experiencing.
Author and photographer David G. Futey, a Colorado Springs resident, and author Richard L. Orndorff offer brief descriptions of the landforms and landscapes in such areas as Brian Head, Zion National Park, the Tushar Mountains, the San Rafael Swell, Arches National Park and Fish Lake, with plenty of glossy photos to demonstrate specific geological features.
