If you agree with Lou Dobbs on immigration, you’re going to think Benjamin Powell is a jackass and an idiot.
That was the reaction Dobbs had to the views of Powell and other like-minded economists on immigration and labor when the Boston-based economist appeared on a recent episode of “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”
Powell, a research fellow at the Independent Institute and a professor of economics at Suffolk University, advocates completely free labor markets.
“Often it seems American objections to immigration center on that it’s a drain on our economy, that immigrants will steal jobs from Americans or that they’re going to depress our wages,” Powell says. “But actually there’s no economic evidence of any of this. Even conservative estimates of the benefits from immigration to the U.S. both legal and illegal put it at $20 billion per year.”
