Getting your player ready...

At the risk of telling you something you already knew, Mike Shanahan looks at a lot of film.

How much film? Let’s put it this way. Maybe they ought to call it Ebert & Shanahan.

So what does Shanahan do when he puts down his remote and takes a break from the video monitor? The same thing everybody else in Denver is doing these days.

He checks in on the Rockies.

Shanahan is a big baseball fan who has been known to visit the box seats at Coors Field. And coming from Chicago, he knows a little about struggling ballclubs. That’s why he’s enjoying the Rockies’ feel-good story.

And he isn’t alone, either. Some of the Broncos’ players have jumped on the Rockies’ bandwagon, too.

The question came during Shanahan’s regular Wednesday press conference: Can the Broncos feed off the positive vibe the Rockies have created with their incredible march through September?

“There’s no question about it,” Shanahan said. “If you’ve been in sports for a long time, you understand that you can have some adversity, but it’s how you react to that adversity. I think the Rockies are living proof. No one had them going far, but they’re fighting back. It’s good to see that, good to see their character.”

While it’s all good for the Rockies these days, the Broncos are the ones who are facing adversity. Not to mention Peyton Manning, arguably the greatest quarterback that ever was.

Maybe the Broncos should sign Padres manager Bud Black before heading for Indy. Or maybe you missed that open-field tackle he made on Milton Bradley the other day?
