GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A former police officer has been sentenced to 72 years in prison for a collision last March that killed two college sweethearts.

Patrick Strawmatt of Westminster had pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, first-degree assault and vehicular eluding. Authorities said his blood-alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit.

Police said the 42-year-old Strawmatt was driving an SUV at more than 100 miles per hour when he rammed a small car from behind on Interstate 70 near Clifton in western Colorado.

Jacob Brock and Jennifer Kois, both 19 years old, were killed.

Police were chasing Strawmatt at the time.

Strawmatt was once a Lafayette police officer.
