Getting your player ready...

I don’t know about you, but I always get nervous when I hear players talking about missed assignments.

Which brings us to Broncos safety John Lynch. He says the team’s embarrassing loss to Jacksonville at home was all about missed assignments. Presumably, about linemen and linebackers not filling their assigned gaps, leading to big gains in the Jaguars’ running game.

In other words, it isn’t about a lack of talent or experience. It’s all about players not quite getting to their gaps on time to meet the ballcarrier and prevent a big play.

In a league in which players and coaches have their own vocabulary to keep from publicly pointing the finger at teammates, I wonder if it really is all about missed assignments. If you ask me, it sounds like the old “the dog ate my homework” defense.

Maybe, just maybe, the Broncos are simply coming up short at the point of attack, not meeting the physical challenge at the line of scrimmage. Maybe, just maybe, they simply got pushed around by the Jaguars. Maybe, just maybe, it had more to do with those things and less to do with, oh, yeah, missed assignments.

This much is certain. If the Broncos’ defensive line doesn’t meet the physical challenge against the Colts, it’s going to be a long day at Indy.
