WINDSOR, Colo.—A Windsor police officer wounded by a man accused of stealing about $25 worth of candy was in stable condition Sunday.
The man who shot him, who also wasn’t identified, was dead but it wasn’t immediately clear if he was killed by a second police officer who fired at him or if he killed himself later.
The man, who was in his late 60s, was accused of stealing candy from a Safeway. The officers went to his apartment in a senior citizens housing complex to investigate and the man began firing as soon as he opened the door, administrative sergeant Jerry Selzer said.
Weld County sheriff’s spokeswoman Margie Martinez said the wounded officer was shot three times in areas covered by his protective vest and once or twice in his lower body.
