Park South Hotel 124 E. 28th St., New York, NY, 212-448-0888,

.

Rates: Start at $259 per night for a room with queen bed; executive rooms have king beds and are larger; junior suites available. Look for online deals. Parking is tricky: They have a negotiated rate at a lot one block away ($19 a night), but no SUVs or vans.

Stay here if you’re: A business traveler who wants decent amenities but doesn’t have an executive expense account. Has a workout room, business center and restaurant. Breakfast is included, as are two daily newspapers.

It’s close to: Between Park and Lexington avenues, it’s a hop-skip from subway and bus lines that will transport you quickly to such midtown attractions as the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center.

The rooms are: Small but clean and renovated in the past few years. In-room fridge and safe. Don’t pack too much because the closet is tiny.

They put all of the money into: Redoing the rooms, updating bathrooms and providing a workspace with free wireless Internet access.

The bottom line: This hotel is priced well for what you get, and the staff is friendly and helpful. An added perk: a smorgasbord of restaurants nearby.
