Freshman Anthony Maiani scored a goal and had two assists and classmate Tyler Bozak added a goal and an assist as the University of Denver hockey team toppled the University of Calgary 5-1 in an exhibition game at Magness Arena on Sunday.
Brock Trotter scored a four-on-four goal at 16:41 of the first period to open the scoring for DU. Rhett Rakhshani’s goal 49 seconds into the second period proved the game-winner.
Longmont woman wins Gold. A Colorado woman became a gold medalist in bowling Saturday at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.
Lorraine Grimm of Longmont and Jessica Haggerty of Elizabethtown, Ky., rolled a combined 639 three- game series in the doubles competition to take home a gold medal. Grimm and Haggerty were also part of a four-person team that won a silver medal last week.
Phinney wins individual pursuit. Taylor Phinney of Boulder-based Team Slipstream/Chipotle won the men’s individual pursuit at the Elite Track National Championships last week in Los Angeles.
The 17-year-old Boulder native, who had already won the junior world time trial championship, finished in 4:38.413 to beat Slipstream teammate Brad Huff in the final. Mike Friedman won the bronze as Slipstream swept the podium.
Evergreen’s Flater headed to New Zealand. Roald Flater of Evergreen was selected for the U.S. men’s Mulloy Cup tennis team (age 80 and over) that will compete at the ITF international team tournament in November in Christchurch, New Zealand. Flater is one of four players in the division on the U.S. team that will play in the Davis Cup-style competition.
