WASHINGTON – Rep. Doug Lamborn is joining the House Armed Services Committee, a post he had been criticized for not attaining.

The Colorado Springs Republican received the seat when Rep. Jo Ann Davis, R-Va., died last week.

The appointment shows that the earlier criticism “is groundless,” Lamborn said. “Our strong military presence is a great source of pride for my constituency, and I am proud to represent them.”

National Jewish shares in grant for major COPD study

Researchers at National Jewish Medical and Research Center and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, have won a $37 million grant to lead the most comprehensive study of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ever done.

The grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute will be used to identify the genetic, epidemiological and radiological characteristics of the disease.

The study will focus on 10,500 participants – including 3,500 African- Americans – enrolled by 16 clinical centers across the country.

Scalper arrested near Coors

A ticket scalper near Coors Field was arrested Thursday for selling a pair of tickets to an upcoming Rockies playoff game for triple the face value, police said.

The man had 58 Rockies playoff tickets and a spreadsheet showing that he hoped to make $14,000 profit on the illegal sales, said Lt. Ron Saunier, a police spokesman.

The alleged scalper, who was not identified by police, had purchased 60 tickets, totaling $3,090, for the upcoming series against the Arizona Diamondbacks through a Coors Field ticket window before they sold out, Saunier said.

He said the man sold two $100 seats to two undercover officers Wednesday for $300 apiece.

He faces possible misdemeanor charges and possible fine of up to $900, police said.

The tickets were all confiscated by the police.

Woman faces murder charges in shooting near Sloan’s Lake

A 42-year-old woman faces murder charges in the shooting death Monday of a 56-year-old man near Sloan’s Lake, according to a police report.

Shari Herrera of Edgewater was seen speaking with Joseph Trujillo of Denver shortly before a shot was fired and Trujillo fell to the ground, according to the report.

Herrera was arrested on investigation of first-degree homicide and is being held in Denver City Jail, according to court records.
