Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor spoke to hundreds of law students at the University of Denver this afternoon.

“I’m now just an unemployed cowgirl,” she told them.

She came to DU at the invitation of Rebecca Love Kourlis, a former Colorado Supreme Court justice who now runs DU’s Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System.

O’Connor encouraged the students, telling them it is an amazing time to study and practice law, with issues such as executive power and military tribunals in play. She advised them to concentrate just as much on learning to negotiate settlements and get things done in the public sector as on going to court.

First-year student Amy Lopez, 23, called the talk “very inspirational.”

“It’s interesting to hear she was advocating alternative dispute resolution.” Lopez said. ” There’s too much litigation in the U.S.”
