LONGMONT – A church’s controversial 348-acre retail and commercial development in eastern Longmont is stalled because of a successful petition drive by opponents.
At least 4,725 of the more than 6,000 signatures gathered by opponents of the LifeBridge Christian Church’s Union proposal were ruled valid by the Longmont city clerk Wednesday. The City Council now has until Nov. 15 to either repeal its August decision approving the LifeBridge development or put the issue up for a public vote, said City Clerk Valeria Skitt.
The council voted Aug. 14 to annex the church’s land on Colorado 119 south of Union Reservoir into Longmont. The council also approved preliminary development plans for the land that include 300 to 700 homes; 680,000 square feet of commercial development, including a 150,000- square-foot sports and fitness center; and 1 million square feet of religious and civic construction.
