A Denver man has been charged with careless driving causing death after he backed out of a driveway and hit his grandmother Wednesday morning.

Gustavo Lomeli-Chavez, 21, was at the wheel of a 1999 Ford Expedition leaving the driveway at 7880 Robin Lane in Adams County when he struck Juana Saucedo, 87, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Authorities don’t know whether Saucedo was walking or standing behind the car, or if she had fallen to the ground before she was hit, said State Patrol spokesman Gilbert Mares. Saucedo, a Denver resident, was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

There is no indication that alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident. Lomeli-Chavez was issued a summons and released. The matter is being investigated.
