Organizers of Sunday’s Denver Marathon have waived the $105 entry fee for runners who failed to finish last Sunday’s Chicago Marathon because of temperatures in the high 80s.
Chicago race officials closed the course early because of the oppressive heat and humidity. Nearly 36,000 runners entered, but less than 25,000 finished. More than 300 were hospitalized and a 35-year-old man died, although his death was blamed on a heart defect.
“In response to many local Colorado runners who were hoping to complete the Chicago Marathon last weekend but could not finish, our race wants to give these runners another chance to reach the finish line,” Denver Marathon executive director Anton Villatoro said.
Denver’s high temperature Sunday is forecast in the 50s – pretty close to ideal for marathon running – but showers are possible.
