EAGLE, Colo.—A twin-engine prop plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 70 Wednesday near the Eagle County Airport, temporarily shutting down westbound lanes between Gypsum and Eagle.
The Colorado State Patrol said no injuries were reported.
Pilot David Kunkel, 62, told the Vail Daily that he landed on the highway after both of his engines failed.
“I wasn’t going to quite make it,” said Kunkel, who was headed from Denver to Meeker.
Witnesses said they saw the plane land and continue driving down the highway toward the Gypsum exit.
Carole Bukovich, who saw the landing from her office window, said there didn’t appear to be any cars in the westbound lanes when the plane landed but there were cars headed eastbound. She said the plane drove down the interstate toward the Gypsum exit.
Ellen Gall also saw the landing from the Colorado Mountain News Media building.
“Everything was very much in control. He looked like he was where he was supposed to be except he was airplane instead of car,” Gall told the Vail Daily.
The landing shut down I-70 for about an hour. The FAA will investigate, the state patrol said.
