A twin-engine airplane safely landed in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Gypsum this afternoon, officials say.
David Kunkel, 62, of Meeker was flying solo from Denver International Airport to Meeker when the plane’s engines suddenly failed at about 1:17 p.m., said Gilbert Mares, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.
The State Patrol has received no reports that motorists had to take evasive action to avoid an accident, Mares said.
Kunkel was not injured during the emergency landing, he said. He was in a Cessna 340, a five-seat passenger plane.
The westbound lanes of I-70 were closed temporarily but have reopened after the plane was towed off the highway, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
