Nearly 4.7 million travelers used Denver International Airport in August, a 7 percent increase from the same month last year.

That made August the second-busiest month on record at DIA, behind July 2007 when nearly 4.8 million people used the airport, according to data released today.

With the record passenger-traffic levels, DIA also is on track to set another record for the year. In the first eight months of 2007, DIA had 34 million passengers, up 4.6 percent from the year-ago period. For the full year 2006, DIA had a record 47.3 million passengers.

DIA manager Turner West said in a written statement that “airlines continued to operate with very few empty seats this summer.”

“That’s a tribute to the strong competition and relatively low fares in Denver,” he said.

The year-over-year growth in August passenger traffic was stronger than in recent months, showing particularly heavy late-summer travel this year.
