“The Complete Travel Detective Bible”
Travel writer Peter Greenberg is always trying to help us figure out how to be more efficient, knowledgable travelers, and this very stuffed book is yet another attempt. The only problem with “The Complete Travel Detective Bible: The Consummate Insider Tells You What You Need to Know in an Increasingly Complex World” ($17.95, Rodale Books) is that, like its title, it’s long and heavy.
I had to read it in bits and pieces, and I’ve forgotten most of it already. Of course, you’re supposed to use it as a reference, looking things up on a need-to-know basis, but first you would need to know that the information on, say. how to vacation in a converted prison is in there in the first place.
And indeed, there is a lot of valuable information in this big, fat book, such as talk to the maids to get good insider info on a city, and don’t trust the departures board to see if your flight will be on time; instead, first find out if the incoming plane was delayed.
So I plan to read it again. And maybe again after that.
