The Kansas men’s basketball team has been chosen to win the Big 12 title this season in a vote of the league’s coaches. It is the second straight year the Jayhawks, the 2007 league champions, have been chosen to win. They received 10 of 12 possible first-place votes.
Texas finished second with 105 overall points, and Texas A&M, who received the other two first-place votes, came in third. The Colorado Buffaloes finished 12th, with 16 overall points.
Mines lineman honored. Colorado Mines defensive end Marc Schiechl was chosen the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s defensive player of the week for his play in last Saturday’s 28-0 win over New Mexico Highlands.
The Bear Creek High School graduate had seven tackles and set a school record with four sacks in the game. The freshman currently leads the Orediggers in sacks this season with 7.5.
CU’s Webster named player of week. Colorado’s Callie Webster was named the Big 12 volleyball defensive player of the week. She recorded a career-high 33 digs in a loss against Missouri, the first time a Buffalo recorded more than 30 digs in a match since 1995.
Denver wins behind Benson’s play. Led by Holly Benson, the University of Denver (11-9) volleyball team beat Louisiana-Monroe 3-0 (30-19, 30-24, 30-11) on Thursday night.
Benson had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Clare Maxwell led all players with 37 assists.
Rams volleyball team blanks Falcons. Colorado State’s volleyball team, ranked No. 23, beat Air Force in three games (30-21, 30-17, and 30-21) in Colorado Springs, giving the Rams 12 wins in their past 13 matches. Danielle Minch hit a career-high .438 with 10 kills to lead the Rams (12-4, 6-1 MWC).
Roadrunners sweep awards. Metro State’s men’s soccer team swept the RMAC players of the week honor, with forward Phillip Owen being named the offensive player of the week and defender Andrew Donnelly claiming the defensive player award.
Owen set Metro State’s career goals record with 48, after scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Incarnate Word. Donnelly scored the game-tying goal for the Roadrunners in a 2-1 overtime win against St. Edwards.
