DENVER—First the Colorado Rockies advanced to the National League championship series. And now the state has its first Powerball jackpot winner.
The Colorado Lottery said the $20 million ticket was purchased at a Safeway. It’s the first jackpot-winning ticket sold in Colorado since the state joined the game back in 2001.
Deputy director Tom Kitts said the winner has 180 days to come forward but he said whoever has the winning ticket should sign the back of it immediately to establish their ownership.
“We don’t assume anything until we’ve actually seen the winning ticket,” he said.
The randomly selected numbers on Wednesday were 12, 16, 31, 33 and 54 and multiplier was 4. Kitts noted that the Powerball was 5, the number of Rockies’ slugger Matt Holliday. It was his triple and run home that launched the Rockies into the playoffs in the 13th inning against San Diego.
“Hopefully number five is lucky for Matt Holliday tonight. It was certainly lucky for somebody else,” he said.
