Today is the final 2007 foray for the San Luis Express, the Rio Grande train that spends May to mid-October chugging daily between Alamosa and La Veta. But even without an iron horse, La Veta, a small town on the celebrated Highway of Legends, is a lovely getaway. Plan a long weekend visit that begins on a Friday to guarantee visiting all the local galleries (several close on Sundays) along with La Veta’s most popular bakery. La Veta is home to eminent quilt artist Ricky Tims, as well as to a championship golf course. Hard-core railway buffs will have to wait till next May for the San Luis Express to fire up again.
Getting there: From Denver, take Interstate 25 south to Walsenburg, turn west, following signs to U.S. 160, and turn south on Colorado 12 for about 5 miles.
