BARNEGAT, N.J.—The Coast Guard says one of its helicopters lifted two stranded boaters to safety when their rented pontoon boat became stranded on a sandbar.

Petty Officer 1st Class Nyx Cangemi says Bob’s Marina in Barnegat Light alerted authorities when the boaters failed to return on time.

He says that when a Coast Guard vessel could not get close to the boaters because of shallow water, a helicopter on a night training mission was diverted to the two men, about 2 1/2 miles off Barnegat.

Rescued were two brothers: Paul Grabon, 53, of Barnegat, and Michael Grabon, 58, of Divide, Colo.
