DURANGO, Colo.—District Attorney Craig Westberg was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of sleeping pills.

The arrest Wednesday was his third in 30 years on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has publicly said he had a drinking problem in the 1970s.

Westberg said no alcohol was involved in the most recent case. He said he had taken a sleeping pill and didn’t realize how it would affect his driving.

He was cited with misdemeanor charges of careless driving and driving under the influence of a drug. Westberg said he was unsure whether he would contest the charges.

The case will be handled by the 7th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Montrose.

Westberg was arrested after two residents told authorities they saw a car failing to stay in a single lane, with one resident saying the driver struck a gas pipeline vent without stopping, the State Patrol said.
