CHADRON, NEB. — Chadron State, ranked No. 4 in Division II, got two touchdown runs from Danny Woodhead and stayed atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings with a 31-9 victory Saturday over Fort Lewis at Elliott Field.

The Eagles (7-0, 4-0) remain tied with Mesa State (7-0, 4-0) for the RMAC lead. Chadron and Mesa face each other Oct. 27.

Woodhead, the NCAA all-time, all-classification career rushing leader, ran for 109 yards, increasing his record total to 7,550 yards. Woodhead’s 60-yard run for a score less than two minutes in helped Chadron to a 7-0 lead.

Joe McLain added 245 yards passing for the Eagles.

Fort Lewis (1-5, 1-4) pulled within 14-9 after Ryan Ames caught a 21-yard TD pass from Dave Nieman and Ames kicked a 21-yard field goal with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter.

The Skyhawks had 326 yards in total offense, the first game this season they topped 300 yards.

“We knew (Fort Lewis coach Ed Rifilato) would have a good defensive scheme,” Chadron coach Bill O’Boyle said. “He also pulled out several pass plays that crossed us up a few times. But the (CSC) kids responded well.”

Mesa State 30, Western St. 27 GUNNISON — Philip Vigil scored on a 1-yard TD run with 4:49 remaining as visiting Mesa State overcame a furious Western State rally at the Mountaineer Bowl.

Western (0-7, 0-5), trailing 23-3 midway through the third quarter, went on a 24-0 run behind two Nathan Acrey touchdowns, a Lloyd Tucker 42-yard field goal and Adrian Trujillo’s 31-yard interception return.

The Mountaineers led 27-23 with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter.

But the Mavericks rallied behind Bobby Coy, who led all rushers with 247 yards.

Dusten Copeland caught nine passes for 166 yards to lead the Mountaineers.

Neb.-Kearney 56, Adams St. 34 ALAMOSA — Quarterback Dennis Havrilla threw five touchdown passes, three in the third quarter, as visiting Nebraska- Kearney topped Alamosa at Rex Stadium.

Havrilla completed 15-of-26 passes for 274 yards, and his five scores went to four different receivers to lead the Lopers (4-2, 3-1).

The Grizzlies (1-7, 1-4) got 259 yards passing from Billy Lund- quist, who was 21-of-41 with three TDs.

Colorado Mines 38, Western N.M. 21 GOLDEN — Adam Saur caught a 71-yard scoring pass from David Pesek on Mines’ first play from scrimmage, and the Orediggers (4-3, 3-1) cruised past visiting Western New Mexico (2-5, 2-3) at Brooks Field.

Pesek completed 27-of-45 passes for 404 yards and two TDs, and Derek Dykstra caught 11 for 161 yards to lead Mines.

Rhodes (Tenn.) College 30, Colorado College 29

COLORADO SPRINGS — Chris Catalanotto kicked a 31-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining as visiting Rhodes spoiled the Tigers’ homecoming in a Div. III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Washburn Field.

Max Green kicked a 22-yard field goal to put Colorado College (3-3, 1-3) ahead 29-27 with 1:06 remaining. The Tigers lost their first two quarterbacks, Jon McDonald and Scott Green, to injury earlier in the game. But third-stringer Ross Alisiani, normally a wide receiver, led a 65-yard drive before Green’s go-ahead field goal.

But Rhodes (4-2, 2-1) drove back down the field in less than a minute for the game-winner.
