COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Michael Phelps earned a leading five nominations for the Golden Goggle Awards, which honor the year’s top USA Swimming performances.
Phelps was nominated in three individual categories and for two relays in connection with his historic performance in March at the world championships in Melbourne, Australia. He won seven gold medals and broke four individual world records.
Ryan Lochte received four nods, while Natalie Coughlin, Katie Hoff and Kate Ziegler were the leading women with three nominations announced Monday.
Phelps will compete with Lochte and backstroker Aaron Peirsol for male athlete of the year honors. That trio was also nominated for male performance of the year, a category in which Phelps was nominated for two different races.
Phelps also was part of the nominated men’s 400- and 800-meter freestyle relay teams.
Late-night talk show host Carson Daly will preside over the awards on Nov. 18 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Fans can vote for the winners online beginning Tuesday.
