An alleged drunken driver who hit a man walking home from LoDo has been charged with vehicular homicide, the Denver district attorney’s office said today.

Christopher Sprout, 30, was arrested Oct. 7 for investigation of vehicular homicide after the SUV he was driving struck and killed Kevin Watt, 24, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

Sprout is free on $25,000 bail, according to Denver County Court records.

Jackson said Sprout faces prison time because he was drunk when his Volkswagen SUV struck Watt at 2:20 a.m. near Walnut and 29th streets. Watt was thrown 119 feet and died, he said.

Watt was a published poet and artist who worked for Aon Consulting in Denver, said his brother, Brian Watt, of Bethesda, Md.

Brian Watt, 31, described his younger brother as an outgoing person who made friends easily.

The night before he died, Kevin Watt attended the Colorado Rockies game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He met a couple at the ballpark who were so impressed with his personality that they tracked Watt’s family down, after seeing news reports that he had been killed, to pass along condolences although they had only met him once, Brian Watt said.

“I feel that the people who knew him are the lucky ones,” Brian Watt said. “He touched so many people in such a short amount of time. I wish we had more time.”
