CORTEZ, Colo.—Montezuma County voters will be asked to extend term limits for four county offices in a mail-in election next month.

The sheriff, clerk and recorder, treasurer and assessor would be allowed to serve three terms instead of two. Each term lasts four years.

County Commissioner Larrie Rule said the commissioners were not included in the proposal because their jobs are primarily political while the other four positions require more specific training and skills.

“If you get a good person in there doing a good job, it’s detrimental to the county when they have to go away and you have to start all over,” Rule said. “That person should be able to keep that job if they win a re-election.”

Ballots will be mailed to voters by the end of this month and must be turned in by Nov. 6 to be counted.
