DENVER—After raising $1 million in the past three months, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall has about three times more money to spend than Republican Bob Schaffer, who is running for the same seat.
Udall, a congressman representing the 2nd District, reported $3.1 million in cash on hand on Sept. 30, the end of the third quarter.
Schaffer, a former 4th District congressman, brought in $776,906 in contributions in July, August and September and has $1.2 million to spend.
Udall and Schaffer are running to replace Republican Sen. Wayne Allard. They’re expected to spend a combined $30 million on the race.
Of three Democrats are vying to replace Udall in Congress, state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald reported raising the most—$387,598. She had placed last in the March-June reporting period.
Jared Polis reported $368,761, including $19,639 from himself, and Will Shafroth, a Boulder environmentalist, said he raised $208,259.
“What this shows is that the Fitz-Gerald campaign continues to grow and to strengthen,” campaign manager Mary Alice Madarich said.
Polis’ campaign criticized Fitz-Gerald for taking $115,000 from political action committees, most of them tied to unions. Polis received $6,250 from political action committees and Shafroth received $1,000.
In the 4th District, Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave raised $290,638 in the third quarter while Democrat Elizabeth Helen Markey raised $117,000. Former state Rep. Angie Paccione, a Democrat who dropped out of the race last month, raised $66,385.
In the 5th District, Rep. Doug Lamborn is being challenged by fellow Republicans Jeff Crank and Bentley Rayburn, a retired Air Force major general.
Lamborn raised $85,731 in the last quarter and Crank has brought in $77,000 in six weeks. Rayburn doesn’t have to report his contributions until December because he did not enter the race until this month.
In the presidential race, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama is still the top fundraiser in Colorado with $1.2 million, followed Republican Mitt Romney, who has raised $688,001.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton raised the most money in the last quarter, $356,294, for a total of $535,802. Her campaign held several fundraisers since June, including one hosted by Bill Clinton, and she picked up the endorsement of former Denver mayor Wellington Webb last month.
Coloradans have donated $4.2 million to presidential candidates so far, $2.4 million going to Democrats and $1.8 million to Republicans.
