The Colorado Eagles and Rocky Mountain Rage of the Central Hockey League on Wednesday cut their 2007 rosters to the required 19 players in anticipation of season-opening games Friday.

The defending CHL champion Eagles return with veterans Greg Pankewicz, Ryan Tobler, Brad Williamson and Riley Nelson and goaltender Marco Emond. Colorado last season won its second CHL title with a 4-3 victory over the Laredo Bucks. It was the Eagles’ second title in the past three seasons.

The Rage, which returns just four players, has a 19-player roster with 16 Canadians. One of the three Americans is Columbine High School graduate Chip Dunleavy, a right wing.

The Eagles start the season on the road Friday against the Arizona Sundogs. The Rage travels to face the Odessa Jackalopes.

DU lacrosse captains named. The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team named seniors Brett Koll and Jon Paulson, junior Joey Murray and transfer Carlos Navarro its captains for the 2008 season, coach Jamie Munro said.

Metro men’s soccer cracks top 10. The Metro State men’s soccer team moved up two spots in the National Soccer Coaches Association weekly rankings to No. 9. The Roadrunners (12-1-3) last week beat 2006 national runner-up Fort Lewis 2-0 in Durango and tied Mesa State 1-1 in double overtime in Grand Junction.

CC volleyball ranked. The Colorado College women’s volleyball team moved into the Division III rankings for the first time since the 2000 season at the No. 25 spot in the poll by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Tigers (18-8) have made nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in coach Rick Swan’s 10 seasons.
