Father accused of cruelty to his infant daughter

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on investigation of cruelty to a child after doctors discovered his infant daughter had 24 fractures, according to court records.

Steven Morris was held for allegedly abusing Tamara Morris, who was born Aug. 30, according to Denver District Court records.

The Denver Department of Human Services is now involved in the child’s welfare, said Benilda Samuels, a department spokeswoman. She said she could not comment further about the agency’s role.

Tamara’s mother, Linda Morris, told police that she left the child with her husband Oct. 8 and went to work, a court report by Detective Ken Klaus said.

When Linda Morris returned to their Denver home, Tamara was crying and appeared to be in pain, the report says. Physicians examining the child discovered that her femur was broken.

Bear enters condo, injures woman

ASPEN — For the second time in a week, a black bear attacked an Aspen-area resident after entering a home, according to wildlife officers.

An unidentified woman was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital on Wednesday morning with facial injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

The bear entered her Aspen condominium through an unlocked sliding- glass door and escaped after the incident. Wildlife officers set traps and anticipated killing the bear because of its aggressive behavior.

Last week, a 72-year-old Snowmass Village man was injured slightly when he encountered a bear in his garage. That bear was killed at the scene.

School-board candidate posts bail in traffic-ticket case

A candidate for Denver’s school board posted bail Wednesday in the case of a traffic ticket that had gone unpaid for more than a year, according to city records.

John McBride, 57, who is running for the at-large seat on the Denver school board, in September 2006 was ticketed for running a red light and not having proof of insurance.

An arrest warrant had been issued Nov. 3 because the ticket had gone unpaid. McBride said that he had forgotten about the ticket and did not know an arrest warrant had been issued.

McBride paid the ticket Wednesday and posted $750 bail. A court date was scheduled for Nov. 8 for McBride to prove that he has insurance.

People smuggler gets a year in prison

GOLDEN — A man arrested in April for smuggling 10 people from Mexico into Colorado has been sentenced to a year in prison.

Gopsalo Jose-Reyes, 36, pleaded guilty Oct. 10 to criminal impersonation for giving officers a false name after employees of the King Soopers at West 32nd Avenue and Youngfield Street noticed several people washing up in the store’s restroom and called police.

Initially, he also was charged with 10 counts of human smuggling, but the charges were dropped because those who were smuggled could not be located.

Jose-Reyes admitted to police that he was in the country illegally and that he charged people $500 to $1,000 each to be smuggled across the border.

Judge Lily Oeffler gave Jose-Reyes an 18-month prison sentence but suspended six months on the condition that he not return to the U.S. without proper legal paperwork.
