Another popular Broncos veteran has left the locker room.
Tight end Stephen Alexander was placed on injured reserve Thursday, a transaction that not only ends his season but most likely ends his 10-year NFL career.
“Honestly, I don’t plan on playing anymore,” Alexander said. “If this is the end, which it more than likely will be, I’m totally fine with it.”
His roster spot will be filled by Chad Mustard, a backup offensive tackle and tight end who was re-signed Thursday.
Alexander was the Broncos’ starting tight end the past two seasons, but in the final preseason game this year, he suffered what later was diagnosed as a fractured fibula. The Broncos had planned on Alexander’s return after the bye week but he reinjured the leg during practice Monday.
Footnotes. Champ Bailey (quadriceps), the Broncos’ star cornerback, said he would know more today whether he will be able to play Sunday night against Pittsburgh. … Veteran defensive end Simeon Rice said it appeared the Denver coaches were going to hold him out for a second consecutive game Sunday. … Running back Travis Henry talked briefly Thursday about trying to run the ball on Pittsburgh: “It’s going to be tough. One of them games.” But he was evasive when asked about his off-field distractions: “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m doing good.”
