SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives said Thursday they recovered Nazi artifacts stolen from a storage unit two years ago.
The items, including an ornate scroll addressed to Adolf Hitler, were obtained from an antiques dealer who had been approached by somebody wanting to sell them.
The items are believed to have come from Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” in the Bavarian Alps and brought home by a GI after World War II. Authorities believe the pieces are genuine, but they were working to certify their authenticity.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office displayed the items at a news conference, hoping the publicity would help the investigation.
Detective Scott Van Waggoner wondered whether the items were legitimate war souvenirs or were stolen originally.
