Cherry Creeker Rick Reilly, America’s best-loved sportswriter, will be leaving Sports Illustrated for ESPN.
The New York Times reported on its website Saturday that as of Dec. 1, Reilly will no longer pen his wildly popular “Life of Reilly” column. Reilly text-messaged me, confirming the blockbuster move, but said he can’t talk yet about the details.
A fixture in the Cherry Creek and LoDo social scenes, Reilly is a CU-Boulder alum, and began his career in 1981 at the Daily Camera. After stints at The Denver Post and The Los Angeles Times, he started at Sports Illustrated in 1985, where he’s been a mainstay ever since.
When not writing award-winning columns, Reilly dashes off bestselling books, including “Shanks for Nothing,” and “Who’s Your Caddy?” He also co-wrote the screenplay for the forthcoming film, “Leatherheads,” directed by George Clooney, who also stars.
Now that Reilly is an even bigger superstar, will he stay in Denver? We hope so. He’s just about the funniest Denverite we know.
