OMAHA, Neb.—A student at North Platte High School has been diagnosed with an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, the district superintendent said.
Staph infections, including the serious Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, have spread in recent weeks through schools across the nation, according to state and national health officials.
North Platte superintendent Paul Brochtrup announced Friday that a student had contracted the MRSA strain. It was not known whether other students in the district had been diagnosed with the less aggressive strain.
Other cases of school-related staph infection have been reported by Papillion-La Vista and Millard school districts—both in the greater Omaha area—and Garden County Schools.
Officials at those school districts said they were being more vigilant in cleaning their buildings, particularly locker rooms, and were informing students and parents of the illness and what precautions should be taken.
Garden County High School postponed its Friday football game against Bayard over concern of spreading staph.
