Former Denver first lady and state representative Wilma Webb was honored Saturday for outstanding community service during the Sam Cary Bar Association’s annual dinner.
“She spent 13 years in the Legislature and it took her four to push through a holiday (Martin Luther King Jr.)that celebrates all mankind,” said association president Victor Devereaux.
The event held at the Denver Tech Center Marriott also honored eight female judges including Yvonne Y.E. Scott, former State Patrol board member; Judge Margot Jones,of the state Office of Administrative Courts ; Denver County Judge Claudia Jordan ; former Denver magistrates Valerie Morgan-Alston and Claudia Abernathy; Karen Ashby,chief judge of Denver juvenile court and Denver magistrates Catherine Cary and Felicia George.
“We’ve only had eight black women serving on the bench in 131 years of this state’s history and we’re celebrating them tonight,” Devereaux said.
The diverse crowd paid tribute to Webb who was joined by her husband, former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb.
“Nobody does anything alone. I want to thank those who helped me in the House during the Wellington and Clinton administrations,” Wilma Webb said.
Gov. Bill Ritter was the keynote speaker and Congressman Mark Udall was the presenter.
The event featured the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Buffalo Soldiers of the American West and music by Jazz Del Barrio.
