Thornton — Authorities are investigating a morning house fire that killed two people in Thornton as a potential arson, police said.

The fire started about 10:15 a.m. today in the 2400 block of East 96th Way, Thornton police spokesman Matt Barnes said.

Firefighters pulled out a man who was found in the rear of the house, near sliding-glass doors, and later discovered the body of another person in a rear bedroom after the fire was out, Barnes said.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

The second body was burned beyond recognition and authorities were unable to determine whether it was that of a man or woman, Barnes said.

No one else was believed to be in the home when the fire started.

The cause of the fire had not been determined.

Arson investigatiors, Thornton police and Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents are treating the house as a crime scene, Barnes said.

Investigators would not reveal details of the case, but a year ago police responded to the same address on the report of a suicide. Barnes said he did not know if the suicide case had any connection with the two people found in the fire.
